Mayor's Office
Dear Web Site Visitor:
On behalf of the citizens of the City of Nairobi, welcome to our city's official Website.
We are extremely pleased to offer this resource for all who are interested in learning more about our City’s Local Government and the services it provides as well the interests we share as a community.
Nairobi, Africa’s 4th largest city, is Kenya’s capital. The city and its surrounding area also forms the Nairobi County, an area that boasts a diversified economy based on tourism, business, industry, education, health care, recreation and retail.
Nairobi's unique character is rooted in its 111 year history – a history full of bright people and fascinating tales. Founded in 1899 as a simple rail depot on the railway linking Mombasa to Uganda, the town quickly grew to become the capital of British East Africa in 1907 and eventually the capital of a free Kenyan republic in 1963. Today as a city of 4 million inhabitants, it offers visitors its rich cultural heritage, many tourist attractions, a temperate savannah climate and an excellent infrastructure. Famous for being the only city bordering a natural game reserve – The Nairobi National Park, we truly are one of the most picturesque towns in Africa and indeed the world. Within the Nairobi National Park's 117 square kilometers, there are over 80 species of mammals and more bird species than can be found in the whole of the British Isles! Little wonder Nairobi is nicknamed “The Safari Capital of the World”.
Nairobi is now one of the most prominent cities in Africa politically and financially. Home to thousands of Kenyan businesses and over 100 major international companies and organisations, including the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) and the main coordinating and headquarters for the UN in Africa & Middle East, the United Nations Office in Nairobi (UNON), Nairobi is an established hub for business and culture. The Nairobi Stock Exchange (NSE) is one of the largest in Africa and second oldest exchange. It is ranked 4th in terms of trading volume and capable of making 10 million trades a day
Discovering Nairobi, if you are a visitor, is as simple as clicking your mouse. I hope you enjoy your cyber visit and I encourage you to visit Nairobi in person in the near future – you’ll always be welcome!
If you are a resident of Nairobi, our revamped website offers you a better facility to enable you to communicate and interact with city employees via the Internet, to enhance the access to and delivery of services to benefit city residents, business partners and employees. Among the website’s new features is the introduction of e-payment by the council to speed up transaction speeds and accountability while the newly introduced Customer Service Contact Centre will ease tracking of your dealings with the council
In line with Vision 2030, the council has made it a priority to enhance the use of technology and modern communication to ease service delivery. The new website offers better updated links and a contact base that can make your local government more accountable and responsive.
Sincerely,
George Aladwa
His Worship, Mayor of Nairobi
