The City Council of Nairobi Facilities Print E-mail

ImageThere are a wide variety of parks and recreational activities in Nairobi. The most spectacular, Nairobi National Park, is located just five miles south from the city center. The 117-square-kilometer (45-square-mile) park contains impala, Grant ' s gazelle, Thomson ' s gazelle, hartebeest, eland, kudu, zebra, wildebeest, giraffes, birds, rhinos, and hippos. Probably the most visited game park in East Africa, it provides a wonderful opportunity to view the wildlife of Africa silhouetted against the Nairobi skyline. It is open daily from dawn to 7:00 PM.

Uhuru Park and Uhuru Gardens are located along Uhuru Highway, not far from Nairobi University and the city center. Uhuru Park and Gardens are a large urban green space. The Nairobi Arboretum, also located near Nairobi University, provides a restful setting for a walk among its 300 different species of trees. City Park, located two miles north of the city center, is a well-preserved remnant of the woodlands that covered the area before the construction

Law Library
The library is well equipped with law books, statutes, law reports (both East African and All England Law Reports), by-laws and periodicals including Kenya gazettes.

One Top Youth Information Resource Centre

Nairobi One Stop Youth Information Resource Centre is a City Council of Nairobi’s project formed in partnership with various Government units, Civil Society Organizations, UN Habitat and other organizations within the City of Nairobi. Our operations are geared towards young people aged between 15 and 30 years. The programme concentrates on carrying out needs assessment from the ground as well as Gathering, Condensation and Dissemination of State of Art Information to Young People. Dandora Legal Desk
This office was set up to help residents of Umoja and Dandora Estates to access legal services more conveniently. This is line with the department’s goal of reaching residents with legal services. The legal desk is headed by our Advocate Mr. Mogire assisted by two law clerks and handles Conveyancing as well as litigation matters efficiently.
City Court Registry
The registry assists magistrates seconded to the City Court in their duties as well as helping the public in accessing legal services related to offences occurring within the city.
Information about all persons charged, given bail, jailed, discharged, fined or put on Community Service Order (CSO) is readily available at this registry.
Mji Wa Huruma Home for the Aged
This home was started in 1966 on Kiambu Road in Karura Forest (now Runda Estate) and is fully managed by the Council. The home caters for the needy aged persons who have been residents of Nairobi. It provides basic needs, security and medical care to forty four senior citizens within the Mji Wa Huruma. (more at Mji wa Huruma page)

Libraries

The council has 5 libraries namely: McMillan Library, Kaloleni Library, Eastlands Library, Waithaka Technical Training Centre Library and Kayole Library. hese libraries have a holding of over 400,000 (book stock) and 10,000 bound materials that includes newspapers, periodicals and other materials in forms of prints, reports, topographical maps among others worth about Kshs 400 million. Half of this expenditure has been met by the Council over the years while the balance has been met by willing donors. Services of the library includes but not limited to lending facility, reference and information, periodicals and serials, children services, inter-library cooperation, library advisory and community/outreach services

The library functions are:

  • Providing reliable information essential for advancement of community activities,
  • Facilitate research in every sphere by providing a resource centre to scholars,
  • Provide a centre for recreational reading and self-education,
  • Providing supplementary information to school children.
