FOR A GREENER, CLEANER CITY As part of the City Council of Nairobi efforts to restore the lost glory of the City and also through Rapid Results Initiative, tree planting, greening and beautification exercise along Mombasa Road and indeed the entire city is the progress at a great cost to the tax payer. In order to make this exercise by the City Council of Nairobi successful to the expectation of wanainchi, the public is asked to avoid the following activities that may cause damage to and jeopardize environment management efforts:
- Indiscriminate littering
- Trampling of tree seedlings, flowers and other vegetation
- Grazing and rearing of livestock within the city boundaries
- Driving, cycling, walking on grass areas
- Vandalizing public utilities like streetlight poles, theft of gulley covers or manhole covers etc.
- Use of unauthorized walk ways and accesses

SOCIAL SERVICES AND HOUSING DEPARTMENT - Street Families’ Rehabilitation Programme
This is an initiative of the Kenyan Government to assist the needy Street families. The Local Authorities have been mandated to carry out the programme in their areas of jurisdiction. The City Council of Nairobi started the programme in January 2003. Over 3000 formerly members of the street families have benefited through this programme. Due to the diversity of the programme, the City Council is networking with other relevant Government departments, Non-Governmental Organization, Churches, local communities and corporate bodies toward achievement of this noble task. - Nairobi International Trade fare will take place later in the Year September/October and the Department organizes the participation of the Council in this event on behalf of the City Council of Nairobi.
- Mayor Christmas tree will take place during the month of December and the Department will initiate the preparation of this event in the moth of July.
Projects within the Housing SectionThere are two major renovation works being undertaken by the section: - In Gikomba (Gorofani Estate) six units that were gutted down by the fire are being renovated. The work started on January 2008 and will end in May 2008,
- In Embakasi Estate, 42 units are in the process of being painted and receiving minor renovations. This work is ending in April 2008.
- New Ngara Estate will also be renovated starting May 2008.
Projects within the Sports Section- Renovation of the perimeter fence and the gates are underway at the City Stadium.
- The council has also signed a memorandum of understanding with (KFF) Kenya Football Federation to partner in the rehabilitation programme. World football body FIFA through K.F.F is sponsoring the laying of artificial turf at the City Stadium where the work commences on April and ends before December 2008. This will make the stadium to be the first of a kind in Kenya
- Will organize on behalf of the Council, our participation to the Kenya Inter-municipality Sports and Cultural Association tournament (KIMSCA games) this August.
Projects within the Children’s Section- Participating in the two days Annual Street Families Exhibition being held at KICC from 10th to 11th April 2008,
- Vocational training in carpentry, hairdressing and motor vehicle mechanics for 1 year will start this August at Shauri moyo training Centre
- The section is preparing to Participate in the Day of the African Child and the National Youth Week Exhibitions within divisions in the month of August.
- A Street Families’ Management Board will be inaugurated later in the year after consultations with the stakeholder are complete.
PROCUREMNT DEPARTMENT - On going Projects - Pre-qualification of suppliers from October 25th to 29th February ,2008 being the department’s RRI.
- Five various, categories of suppliers have been finalized and the appointment letters have dispatched to the suppliers/contractors.
- We have developed the current financial year (FY 2008-2009) Procurement Plan.
- The department has been chosen/nominated by Public Procurement Oversight board (PPOA) as a pilot study on implementation of E-Procurement in the public sector.
- A Fortnightly tender committee meeting goes on in the department.
- Two staff members have been nominated for ISO 9001-2000 implementation.
- The department is the first “Procurement Department “to be established out of all 175 local authorities in the country.
